When you inevitably drop that hex bit it’s impossible to find.

It’s there. Like, Right there! I see it!

I use scrap pieces of plywood to laydown on, since mine is made of pointy rocks for some reason

Obviously the solution is to replace the gravel and have a hex bit driveway.

Somewhere a T24 torx bit is in the engine bay of my old A6.

Im going to go ahead and say its the gravel. Is it the gravel?

We’ll that’s easy
The real problem is when you drop something greasy and now it’s covered in sand/dirt and you’re paranoid that this is how things end. If you don’t get that last spec of dirt off, it will ruin the engine somehow.

The worst is when you drop a small stainless nut that seemed to vanish into thin air. Then you can’t even sweep the area with a magnet to find it.

EFFFF. Good thing there are massive box stores all over the place on the vineyard so you can totally replace it today

My old Neon has a 12mm socket in the subframe somewhere.

Because it’s gravel?

niceee and hey realistically small hardware stores are just as fun. more personality.

You made me curious, so I had to look it up - apparently high strength 410 fasteners *are* a thing, but so little heard of compared to austenitic stainless they might as well not be. I knew I couldn’t think of seeing anything not 316, so...

No. It means it’s hard to find stuff and you can’t ask for help because they don’t wear uniforms and you can’t tell who’s an employee.

I painted some parts the other day in an area filled with small stone; the parts and their fasteners were all laid out neatly on top of a closed cardboard box. I spray painted them (dark brown) and left them to dry for a while. Then it got windy, but I forgot they were out there. I found the box about 20 feet away and the parts and fasteners not even visible at first glance. I found all the parts, then spent easily 20 minutes searching through the stones for the fasteners, and came up with... most of them.
I need a garage.

Well at least you don’t have to clean up any oil spills.

I lost two compression fitting beads in the dirt while installing my boost gauge. Had to run to O’Reily’s and get new ones.

I have the ghetto version of this. I just took an old blown 12" subwoofer and tied a rope to it so I can just swing it back and forth along the area I am searching. Usually those magnets are strong enough to pick up everything within a few inches.
Great for finding stray nails and whatnot after teardown projects outside the house. :)
